Newick Folk

Bringing Folk Music to Everyone!

Sussex Ceilidh Band

Dr Alan Rae RIP

Today on 12th November 2020 we had to say farewell to our illustrious and much loved band leader, Dr Alan Rae.
Dr Alan Rae

A wonderfully positive and creative force has been lost to the world, and there is a hole in our lives never to be filled. Newick Folk will move forward as a legacy for all the fantastic work Alan put into the band and all we do. Our wonderful double CD still allows us to enjoy the performances we recorded of Alan and also the departed Jem Cooper.

Karn will now take up the reins at the front of the band, also playing guitar and bouzouki. Ian Smith will provide a very experienced bass replacement for smaller lineups, and Aldo Daniel plays bass where we have Rhiannon Daniel playing violin. Here is a picture of an augmented Newick Folk providing appropriate music for the celebration of Alan's life.

New Members play Leaving of Liverpool

We’ve had a busy year playing a number of barn dances as well as lots of private parties and some local festivals at Newick itself, the Black Pig orchard and Townings Farm.

We’re continuing to play every first Sunday of the month at the Crown Inn in Newick and this is gradually attracting more musicians and an ever increasing standard of music.

We’ve also got a couple of new members in the band. Karn Broad who plays Bass when we’re doing Ceilidhs and who has increasingly been depping for Steve and “Professor” Roland Batty on Piano. Roland is an incorrigible boogie player who has both added attack to the dance gigs and has greatly extended the range of numbers that we can attempt.

We welcome them both to the band. Here’s a video of our currently Ceilidh line up performing The Leaving of Liverpool with a brief cameo from Jenny Walton – our splendiferous caller.

David Hill RIP

David was a key member of the Band up until his accident in 2012 from which he never recovered and sadly died in March 2014. Read More…
